| Description | The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, commonly known as Elections Canada, is an independent, non-partisan agency that reports directly to Parliament. * ensures all eligible voters have access to the electoral system * maintains the National Register of Electors * administers electoral legislation * registers political parties, electoral district associations, and third parties that engage in election advertising * monitors election spending by candidates, political parties and third parties * supports independent commissions responsible for adjusting the boundaries of federal electoral districts every 10 years * carry out studies on alternative voting methods and, with the approval of parliamentarians, test alternative voting processes for future use during electoral events * provide assistance and co-operation in electoral matters to electoral agencies in other countries or to international organizations Monitors compliance with electoral legislation * provides educational programs for students concerning elections * provides information to the general public about voting, voter registration and how to register to become a candidate * administers political financing portions of the Canada Elections Act * maintains the National Register of Electors * trains and appoints returning officers Works to provide access to all Canadians to the voting system Provides support to the commissions which adjust federal electoral district boundaries following the Census |
