Description & Services
Alternate Name NYC ; NYS ; SOYC
Description Offers individual counselling for adolescents and young adults (14-24yrs), residing in Peel region. Helps youth build on their strengths and improve how they feel and function at home, school, and in the community. Also provides youth with links to community resources and supports, including the Nexus Youth Centre, located on the second floor of the Mississauga Central Library which is also a program of Nexus.

Services offered through the Community Counselling Program include both brief and longer term service. The service approach is strength-based, youth-centred/directed, and solution focused. NYS is committed to using evidence-informed/evidence-based practices, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, to respond to the unique needs of each adolescent. NYS' Community Counselling Program has incorporated relevant elements of solution focused, brief/single session therapy to offer a brief service model to address the immediate mental health needs of youth, while also offering youth with continuing needs the option to receive further support through longer-term ongoing service.

Counselling supports are available to youth who may be: feeling sad/depressed, anxious, angry; struggling to get along with others; getting into trouble; having problems with drugs and/or alcohol; experiencing bullying; and/or having trouble dealing with difficult things from the past or symptoms of trauma.
