| Description | A community-based clinic dedicated to the assessment of psychosis in adolescents and young adults; an early identification and intervention program in Peel. Offers services dedicated to the assessment and treatment of individuals (16-45yrs) who are at risk for, or who are experiencing signs of, a first-episode psychosis. The clinic is a multidisciplinary outpatient program providing assessment and follow-up (for up to 3yrs) and serving as a resource to clients and their families, and to health care providers in the community. Initial assessment involves the team obtaining information provided by the client, family members and health care providers (The assessment takes place in the office and includes an accurate history and understanding of the problems experienced by the client and how they are affecting the client and the family). Services offered by the clinic include: Support and follow-up to individuals who are at risk for, or who are having clear signs and symptoms of, a psychotic episode. (If participation in the program offered at the clinic is not appropriate, the individual will be referred elsewhere). Provides the following case management and psychiatric services in the clinic: Supportive and personal therapies to help individuals cope with their difficulties Psycho-education including the importance of continuing treatment, early recognition of symptoms and dealing with stress and lifestyle problems Family support, psycho-education and relapse prevention strategies Vocational and occupational rehabilitation Links with established community resources Program objectives include: Providing ongoing support and education for individuals and family members (Case management is time-limited on a case-to-case basis) Increasing the level of knowledge about early psychosis and its treatment by working with health care professionals, crisis services and community groups, including schools and health care agencies Linking with other programs at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health when indicated Psychosis is treatable. Many people make a good recovery from a first episode of psychosis. Many never experience another episode. A first-episode of psychosis can be very frightening, confusing and distressing. What are the early warning signs of psychosis? Confusion about what is real or imaginary Behavioural or personality changes over time Suspiciousness or paranoia Altered perceptions including hearing voices or seeing things Odd thinking, strange beliefs and racing or slowed-down thoughts Exaggerated self-opinion or unusual beliefs Flat emotions Difficulties performing functions, failing at school and loss of friends Loss of interest | |||
